What Should A Newly Married Couple Sort Out First, Health Cover Or Term Cover?

Kabir is 29 and Meher is 28. They got married three months ago; they’re renting a flat, and between them they bring in ₹23 lakh a year. Meher’s office gives her a ₹3 lakh health cover for herself. Kabir works at a small startup and has nothing. Both of their mothers have been asking about insurance, but nobody agrees on what to buy first. So here’s how to think it through.

Which One Is More Likely To Hit You First?

Think about what each policy actually does. Health cover pays when you’re alive and in a hospital bed. Term cover pays your family when you’re not around.

At your age, a hospital stay is far more likely than a death claim. An accident, a bad infection, an appendix that decides to act up. Hospital bills show up fast, and they land on both of you, because one person’s bill is the household’s bill. Term cover matters just as much, but its trigger is rarer.

That’s why, for most newly married couples, health cover tends to come first. There are exceptions, covered further down.

Here’s a quick test. Ask which bill you could pay from savings without flinching. Most couples married under a year can’t comfortably cover a ₹6 lakh hospital stay and also keep paying the rent, the phone EMI and the flight home for Diwali.

What Would A Hospital Bill Do To The Two Of You?

Take a made-up case. Say Kabir needs a week in hospital and the bill comes to ₹6 lakh. Say the couple has ₹8 lakh in savings, built over five years. Without health cover, that one week eats 75% of it.

Meher’s ₹3 lakh from work wouldn’t help Kabir, since it only covers her. And even for Meher, it might not stretch far if something serious comes up. That’s why Kabir needs his own policy now, and Meher should think about a bigger one on top of the office cover.

There’s one more reason to move early. Health policies often have waiting periods before certain conditions are covered, and the clock starts only when you buy. The exact terms sit in each policy’s wording, so read them before you pay. A younger, healthier applicant gets the cleanest start.

What Will Both Covers Cost A Couple At This Age?

Typical premium ranges for a healthy, salaried non-smoker with no riders run from ₹691 to ₹958 a month at 30 for a ₹1 crore term cover till 60. That’s for one person, so two of you would pay roughly ₹1,400 to ₹1,900 a month. You’re a year or two younger, so your own quotes may come in a little lower.

Health cover is harder to pin down because it depends so much on city, age and the policy. For two people in a bigger city, a budget of about ₹1,000 a month is a reasonable assumption to start with. Treat that as a guess, not a quote.

Add it up, and you’re at about ₹2,400 to ₹2,900 a month, or ₹29,000 to ₹35,000 a year. On ₹23 lakh of income, that’s around 1.3% to 1.5%. Compare that with the ₹6 lakh hospital bill above and the cost starts to feel small.

When Does Term Cover Jump The Queue?

Sometimes the order flips. Run through these.

    • You’ve taken a home loan, or you’re about to.
    • One of you earns way more than the other, and the whole household runs on that single salary.
    • Your parents rely on your money each month.
    • You’re expecting a baby soon.

In any of those cases, a death would hurt the family badly, not just emotionally but financially.

How big should the amount be? Try a rough sum. Say you’ve taken a ₹40 lakh home loan and the house costs ₹9 lakh a year. Cover the loan, add five years of spending at ₹45 lakh, and you land on ₹85 lakh. That rounds up to ₹1 crore for Kabir, the bigger earner. Meher’s number can be smaller, since less of the household rests on her salary.

If two or more of these fit, buy term life insurance in the same week as health cover, not after it. Searching for the best term insurance isn’t the hard bit. The hard bit is picking an amount that clears the loan and keeps the household running for years.

Who Can Hold Off On One Of Them?

Not everyone needs both on day one.

If both of you have decent health cover from work, and you have no loan and no one else leaning on your money, you can park term cover for a short while. Just write down a date. A home loan or a baby will force the issue anyway.

On the other side, if neither of you earns much and your savings are thin, getting health cover first and a smaller term life insurance amount second is a fair way to start. Don’t skip health cover just because term cover feels more serious. A bill doesn’t wait.

One caution: office cover often ends when you leave the job. Don’t hang your plan on it. It’s a bonus at best.

Your Plan For The Next 30 Days

Sit down together this weekend and write four things. Who has health cover and how much. What you owe. Who relies on your income. What you can afford each month.

Then buy health cover for whoever has none, and decide on term cover based on that list. If you tick the loan or baby boxes, do both. Whatever you choose, tell your spouse where the papers are, because a policy your partner can’t find is hard to use. And when you pick the health amount, think about what hospitals in your city actually charge, not what the cheapest plan on the screen allows.
